Transnet’s Port Terminals (TPT) and its labour unions are at odds over the privatization process of the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 and the Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT). The South African Transport Workers Union (Satawu) believes the privatization will lead to mass retrenchments and has demanded answers about the future of workers and the extent of private sector involvement. Satawu and TPT have reached a stalemate, and the union is calling for the legal transition team to address the challenges. Transnet aims to improve port efficiencies through private sector participation without selling assets.
