The signing of the NHI Bill by President Cyril Ramaphosa has led to a significant drop in shares of South African medical insurers. Discovery experienced a 7.4% drop, its largest since March 2024, with its shares falling over 18% year-to-date. The impact varied across the sector, as shown by the performance of other medical insurance providers. For example, Momentum and Sanlam have maintained year-to-date gains of 2.2% and 1.58% respectively, indicating a lesser impact compared to Discovery. Discovery CEO Adrian Gore noted that the market’s reaction reflects concerns over potential changes to medical aid benefits, but reassured that it would take at least a decade to fully implement the NHI. The market downturn also extended beyond insurers, impacting the shares of hospital operator Netcare which recorded a notable decline of 5.7%, its largest drop since April 2023.
