Eskom and the Netherlands have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to collaborate on the ‘Just’ initiative, supporting Eskom’s move away from coal and towards renewable energy. The LOI will focus on repurposing the Grootvlei Power Station and other coal plants in Mpumalanga. The collaboration aims to create job opportunities, drive economic growth, and develop climate-smart farming and new enterprises. The partnership is part of the Just Energy Transition Plan, considering the social impact on coal mining communities and aiming for a responsible transition to cleaner energy sources. The Netherlands has committed $8.5 billion in conditional loans to assist South Africa in its shift towards renewable energy.
