The South African Post Office (SAPO) has announced plans to close an additional 235 branches in 2024, as part of its ongoing Business Rescue Plan. Minister Mondli Gungubele revealed this in response to parliamentary questions, stating that most closures will occur in the Free State and Northwest regions. This brings the total number of closures since the pandemic to over 500, out of roughly 1 300 branches nationwide. The closures come amidst financial challenges, with SAPO already having retrenched approximately 6 000 employees, representing 40% of its workforce, due to financial constraints. Another 7 000 jobs are at risk as the organization aims to save R1.3 billion in annual salaries. Despite these difficulties, the government has allocated a R2.4 billion bailout to SAPO, with an additional R3.8 billion pledged, affirming its commitment to the essential services provided by the postal service.
