Discovery presented robust half-year results, highlighting the achievement of its banking arm, Discovery Bank, reaching monthly operational break-even ahead of schedule. Group CEO Adrian Gore emphasized the company’s strong operating performance amidst macroeconomic complexities, with normalised operating profit increasing by 13% to R5.622 million. In South Africa, key highlights included a 9% rise in normalised operating profit to R4.355 million and a 29% surge in new business to R11.1 million across various segments. Discovery maintained its focus on growth, cash generation and capital resilience, with investments in Discovery Bank and Vitality Global yielding exceptional performance. Discovery Bank’s rapid growth, with over 825 000 clients as of December 2023, positions it as a central driver of integrated ecosystems within the group’s South African business. Despite challenges, individual segments like Discovery Individual Life and Discovery Invest demonstrated strong earnings growth, while Discovery Insure faced profit constraints due to severe weather events.
