South Africa plans to prioritize the expansion of its power grid over the next decade to end daily power cuts. The government is working on around 25 projects in existing substations that could potentially unlock about 13 gigawatts of energy, with a target of adding an additional 24 gigawatts in the next 10 years. However, despite these expansion plans, the country’s power utility, Eskom, continues to struggle to meet electricity demand, leading to ongoing power breakdowns and load shedding. Private generation projects that could help alleviate the pressure on the system have been hampered by new regulations governing grid connections, with one developer seeking to block these rules, arguing they are flawed and hinder the addition of more generation capacity.
