Nedbank’s Capital Expenditure Project Listing for 2023 reveals a significant decline in fixed investment activity, totalling R148.8 billion, down from R392.7 billion in 2021 and R259.9 billion in 2022. Private sector projects decreased to R56.1 billion, with renewable energy initiatives comprising nearly half. Public corporations announced six projects worth R27 billion, including a major water supply scheme upgrade. Government projects totalled R101.6 billion, mainly led by the City of Cape Town. Manufacturing, finance, real estate and business services sectors also contributed to planned investments. Despite challenges such as high interest rates and energy shortages, modest growth in fixed investment is anticipated, driven by renewable energy projects and improved global prospects. Resolving the energy crisis and implementing structural reforms are essential to stimulate private sector investment and economic growth.
