The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and its leadership have failed to act in accordance with the union’s constitution, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of members and financial mismanagement. The Western Cape Region is being put under administration after questioning corruption at the top of the union. Many members and staff are facing disciplinary procedures, leading to dismissals and expulsions. A group of Numsa members has taken the union to the Labour Court for breaching the union’s constitution, and a successful application would require the union to convene another congress constitutionally to revive the democracy of the union.
