At the end of March 2023, the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) told Daily Maverick it had embarked on “…a mandate-seeking process” with its members. At least five trade unions in the public sector make up the majority of the Council. Preliminary results revealed that most public servants were willing to accept the government’s final 7.5% offer. The deal runs over two years, with an average 7.5% increase in pay for 2023/24, to be implemented from 01 April. Public servants will be offered a housing allowance increase and in the second year, public servants’ pay will increase with the expected inflation rate, capped at 6.5%.
