The City of Cape Town is investing R1.2 billion in a solar PV and battery storage project to generate 60MW of renewable energy, reducing reliance on Eskom and potentially preventing one stage of load shedding. The project, located near Somerset West, aims to be commissioned by August 2026. The city plans to spend R2.3 billion over the next three years to address load shedding and promote a transition to renewable energy. Funding options and partnerships are being explored. Cape Town is also issuing a 500MW dispatchable energy tender and offering cash incentives to households and businesses for power from their solar PV systems.
