Transnet reports R1.6bn loss despite revenue increase

123

Transnet grapples with financial woes as it reports a significant half-year loss of R1.6 billion amid operational challenges. Despite a noteworthy 8.6% increase in revenue, reaching R39.2 billion, the surge in costs by 9.5% to R25.3 billion, driven by escalating expenses in payroll, electricity and security, has taken a toll on the company’s financial health. Struggling to provide adequate freight rail and port services due to equipment shortages and maintenance backlogs, Transnet received a lifeline from the South African government, its sole shareholder, injecting R47 billion on 01 December 2023 to address immediate debt obligations. Financial support becomes crucial as, Transnet faces a substantial debt of R130 billion and grapples with a significant decline in freight volumes, further complicated by port backlogs lasting up to three months.
