Transnet is in discussions to enhance rail connectivity between the Gqeberha port in Eastern Cape and Gauteng to better integrate the two automotive manufacturing hubs. Transnet stated it is working with the government and funders to expand the Southern Corridor rail network, aiming to add three daily 50-wagon trains for automotive companies. Currently, VW and Isuzu Motors mainly use trucks to move vehicles from Gqeberha to Gauteng, while Ford and BMW with plants in Gauteng could potentially use the line to ship cars to the coastal port. Transnet is also in talks with VW to revive the rail service between its Kariega plant and Gauteng, with a test train run delayed by floods. Additionally, Transnet seeks private operators and investors to boost manganese shipments to Port Elizabeth and Ngqura.
