Standard Bank reports strong earnings despite SA’s current situation

The Standard Bank Group announced results for the twelve months to 31 December 2022. In spite of the Group reporting the highest headline earnings in its history, CEO Sim Tshabalala said he believed the Group could have performed even better. Tshabalala highlighted key risks facing South Africa which include infrastructure breakdown, worsening load shedding and corruption. He said that clients are feeling the strain of the heightened cost of capital. The bank grew headline earnings by 37% and interest income by 24%.
