In his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the commitment to the Presidential Climate Commission’s Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET IP) for 2023-2027, with a focus on electric vehicles (EVs). The National Budget revealed increases in the carbon fuel levy and carbon tax on industries. Significant incentives for local EV production were announced, including a scheme allowing manufacturers to claim up to 150% of qualifying investment spending from March 2026, alongside a R964 million allocation for EV transition. Collaboration with neighbouring countries possessing key minerals and automotive expertise is planned. While the transition to EVs is anticipated to bring economic benefits and job creation, challenges such as range limitations and baseload power capacity constraints persist. Nonetheless, embracing clean energy sources in the national grid could yield substantial economic and environmental benefits if executed effectively with private sector involvement.
