Sanlam has reported that its total claims payouts for 2023 amounted to R10.7 billion, with Sanlam Risk and Savings contributing R6.06 billion and Sanlam Group Risk R4.64 billion. Cardiovascular incidents were the leading cause of claims at 18%, followed by cancer (15%), respiratory illnesses (12%) and accidents (12%). The data also revealed a rise in claims among younger clients, particularly for disability and severe illness, highlighting the importance of appropriate cover. Claims for pregnancy complications, including caesarean sections increased, driven by lifestyle-related health issues. Covid-19-related death claims have decreased, but hospitalisations due to influenza and respiratory syncytial virus have risen, reflecting global trends.
