The European Union (EU) has pledged R628 million in grants to support the development of South Africa’s green hydrogen industry and to promote sustainable investments in Transnet’s operations. As part of the investment, R490 million will be directed towards green hydrogen infrastructure, including production, storage and transportation, aiming to reduce global emissions and boost local economic growth through job creation. Additionally, R138 million will support Transnet’s green transformation strategy, assisting the company in achieving its net-zero emissions goal by 2040. This initiative is part of South Africa’s broader Just Energy Transition Plan, expected to generate significant economic growth and job creation by 2050.
