ArcelorMittal South Africa reverses closure plans for Longs Business division

140

ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) has announced that it will continue operations of its Longs Business division, reversing earlier plans to close and potentially save 3 500 jobs. Initially, AMSA planned the closure due to low demand and price pressures, but deferred to explore various interventions. The division remains fully operational, supported by the non-extension of the steel scrap export ban, improved Transnet port and rail efficiencies, as well as a R1 billion working capital facility. However, efforts to reduce costs through discussions with organised labour were unsuccessful. AMSA is now focusing on structural solutions, including local mineral beneficiation policies and strengthening local supply chains.
