Transnet seeks to enhance port infrastructure with R160bn investment

Transnet’s internal diagnostic review in late 2023 prompted plans for a significant R160 billion investment to tackle infrastructure challenges in South Africa’s port and rail industry. President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged the deficiencies within Transnet, particularly its neglected infrastructure and strained customer relations. Delays at ports were estimated to cost the economy R98 million per day, with billions worth of goods affected. While progress has been made to alleviate the vessel backlog at Durban, experts caution that Transnet’s efforts alone may not suffice due to substantial investment backlogs in rail and port operations. Ramaphosa expressed optimism about positive changes following Transnet’s diagnostic process, announcing plans for the R160 billion investment to enhance port infrastructure, including procuring cranes and expanding berths at the Durban Container Terminal Pier 2.
