Standard Bank Group and UnionPay International (UPI) have entered a strategic partnership to introduce e-commerce acceptance across several African nations. This collaboration, leveraging Standard Bank’s extensive presence in 20 African countries, aims to facilitate seamless e-commerce transactions for UnionPay cardholders on the bank’s online platforms. The initiative works to broaden the acceptance of UnionPay services and attract new clients, contributing to the global connectivity and economic prosperity of the African continent. The partnership aligns with the significant growth projections in African e-commerce, with estimates suggesting that around five hundred million people will engage in e-commerce transactions by 2025, potentially adding $180 billion to the continent’s GDP, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
