Scatec ASA unveiled its 540 MW Kenhardt hybrid solar and battery facility in the Northern Cape, featuring three projects with a total capacity of 540MW solar PV and 225MW batteries, making it one of the world’s largest hybrid solar and battery storage facilities. CEO Terje Pilskog highlighted its significance in addressing power shortages and battling load shedding. The project, with a capital expenditure of R19 billion, employed 2 500 during construction and will supply 150MW consistently to Eskom daily under a 20-year agreement. Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, emphasized its importance in South Africa’s energy future. Pilskog stressed the competitiveness of renewables, with Kenhardt demonstrating its ability to provide firm and baseload power. However, limited grid capacity currently hinders optimal power transmission.
