The National Union of Metalworkers (NUMSA) called off the planned strike for Gautrain employees after successful negotiations with Gautrain management. The talks had been ongoing since April but stalled in June, leading to a potential strike. However, the parties have now reached a settlement, which includes an 8% wage increase across the board, a 10% increase in the housing allowance, a 5% increase in the transport allowance and a R500 increase in the KPI bonus. The agreement is valid from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024. The union was able to retain and increase the housing allowance and reinstate staff cards for employees, allowing them to use the Gautrain without cost, which was a significant concern for workers.
