The New Development Bank (NDB) has approved a R5 billion loan for Transnet, aimed at modernising the country’s freight rail sector. The funds will be used for rail infrastructure renewal, locomotive overhauls and wagon fleet updates which are expected to improve operational performance and reliability in South Africa’s freight transport. The initiative aligns with Transnet’s efforts to restore freight volumes and contribute to a more sustainable future. In addition, the African Development Bank recently approved a R18.85 billion loan to support Transnet’s recovery and growth plans, aimed at expanding its capacity across key segments in the transport value chain.
