Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced a significant expansion of the Gautrain, which is expected to generate over 10.1 million construction jobs within five years. The project will expand the rail service from 80km to 230km, connecting previously underserved communities to key economic hubs. Scheduled to begin in 2026, the R120 billion investment will also integrate a new high-speed railway between Gauteng and Limpopo. Studies have shown that the Gautrain contributes significantly to Gauteng’s GDP, with the upcoming expansion projected to add approximately R5 billion per year to the province’s GDP during construction and R12.4 billion annually during operations.
